There are PTFE braided fuel hoses used in both automotive and industrial fuel transfer applications. These hoses have a special construction with an inner layer of PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene). PTFE as a fuel-hose material is appropriate because it is nonreactive and gasoline, diesel, and even ethanol-blended fuels are, due to their corrosive nature, safe to use while. Moreover, PTFE’s negative friction coefficient is advantageous to fuel flow, which is critical smooth for engine performance. The outer layer consists of a stainless steel or similarly strong braided material which serves as armor against scraping, bending, and other damage to the inner PTFE layer. PTFE braided fuel hoses possess the strength and grit required to withstand the rigorous conditions of high-pressure fuel delivery systems. Their most common application is in high-performance automotive engines that focus on engine efficiency and power output. The nonreactivity and smooth PTFE stir tubes also make them attractive for some industrial equipment that would otherwise damage traditional hoses.
